On 9/11 Remember your local heros — our Police and Fire Departments
By Colleen Kulikowski | September 11th, 2008 | Category: Area Information |9/11 A day to Remember

Each September 11 comes with great sadness for me.  At the time I was a consultant in NYC and had worked in the World Trade Center for many clients.  It was a place of great security, I loved working in that complex. It is also a day that changed everything for me.  A month later I would be living in Florida, reinventing myself into a Realtor®.  Then the realization that Western New York is where I needed to be, and making that so late last year.Â
So each year in rememberance of the 35 people that I knew, who lost their lives that day. And to the countless others that touched my life by working in that amazing complex.  I like to pay tribute to local police and fire in some way to honor them. For several years, I would take baked goods to a local fire department and thank them. This year I have another reason to thank local Police, Fire and EMT’s… So I thought I would thank them publicly here.

Dangerous Intersection:Â Delaware Avenue and North Street
Â
A not so funny thing happened to me the other day on my way to the Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival. I was in an accident with another car that ran through a red light.  This is not an uncommon event at the Delaware/North intersection, as people came up to me to check on me they would tell me how dangerous this intersection is.
I have to say Buffalonians are generous when they see an accident.  An apartment manager, Tex I think his name was, sat with me on the front door of the building, give me water and keeping me calm. Another driver had pulled her car over and stayed with me as I called a friend and she stayed with me until she arrived. Buffalo Police and EMT’s were there almost immediately.
This could be a very sad story, but I am happy to report I am ok.  Very sore, and extreamly lucky. The car on the other hand — not so good.  The other driver ran a red light into my car, another second more and it could have been a lot worse… Â
On this September 11th, I would like to thank the very kind Buffalo EMT’s and Police that assisted me that day.  They were there in my hour of need and were great!   And to every Volunteer in Western New York — Thank you!  What you do is a great gift to everone!
