Moving with Kids in Western New York
By Colleen Kulikowski | November 12th, 2008 | Category: Area Information, Buyer Resources |We’re Moving!
These are words that many kids dread. When it is usually the adults that make all the decisions. But are we really making the best decisions for our children?
Home buying can be traumatic for the kids. Just ask any child who has recently moved. If you are a WNY Buyer with kids, we think you should involve your kids in the process. It goes a long way if you ease your child’s fears about moving.  Some children see it as an adventure, others as the worst thing to ever happen to them.
What is important to kids?
From a Kid’s standpoint these are the most important aspects of a house that make it good enough to be our home:
-
What are the neighbor like
-
Are there kids in the neighborhood to play with
-
Do I have to change schools?
-
This one surprised me — is the view nice, especially if it is a waterfront home
-
Does it have a pool?
-
Will we still be able to get Pizza & Wings from our favorite place?
-
How about a game room or an area that I can gather with my friends
- Is there enough room for me to have my own room!
Some fears that children have about moving:
-
Do I have to change schools?
-
Will I lose my friends?
-
Will I like the new neighborhood?
- If the child is moving far — Will I make new friends?
Here are some things that children felt made a neighborhood nice:
-
Friendly people - as you drive down the street people wave
-
Are there dogs in the neighborhood
-
Safe neighborhood - can I ride my bike freely in the neighborhood
-
Clean neighborhood - no litter, yards are nice and mowed properly, flowers in the garden
-
Is there a community park area, tennis, pool and playground near by
- Is the school nearby? (long bus ride - YUCK!)
Some Suggested Books For Kids about Moving:

By Constance W. McGeorge, illustrated by Mary Whyte; Chronicle Books.

Melanie Mouse’s Moving Day
By Cyndy Szekeres; Golden Books.

If you are planning on moving with the kids anytime soon, you might want to ask them for their input and trust their gut reactions. Kids see things sometimes so clearly that they may just help you from making the wrong purchase for your family!
