Love Canal – Thirty Years Later
Thirty years ago the Love Canal area of Niagara Falls was declared a Federal Disaster area as a result of the toxic chemical dumping on the site by Hooker Chemical.  It is hard to believe that it has been thirty years since Love Canal came to the nation’s attention. Â
I was a pre-teen then and I have some memories of the time.  Thirty years later it brings back strong memories as the news shows news clips from the time and the stories of people forced to leave their Ranch homes because of the health concerns.
Today a 70-acre fenced cap over the original 16-acre landfill now covers the site of the former canal, where Hooker Chemical Company dumped nearly 22,000 tons of toxic waste from 1942 to 1953.  There is an area that has been reclaimed and is now called Black Creek Village and resettled. Â
