Who really wants to live in Buffalo?
A lot more people than you think are relocating to Buffalo, and for many varied reasons. Buffalo NY takes a lot of jokes about the snow and a lot of negative press with it being one of the fastest dying cities. Yes people do leave Western New York, but people leave for many reasons. Remember negative press sells newspapers and magazines.
Perhaps now that Hillary Clinton isn’t running for President, she can finally come through with her campaign promise (in her Senate Race in 2000) of 200,000 jobs for Upstate New York. It appears that our little secret is not so secret anymore. But I digress…
So it is really wonderful to see an incredible article this week in the New York Magazine, entitled Where the Urban Dream Life is Going Cheap by Adam Sternbergh. Adam asks a very interesting question “What could possibly make someone want to leave New York and move to Buffalo?”
But I am here to tell you that this is not a story of defeat. Rather, it’s a story about choices. It’s a story about reaching that pivotal moment when the dream life you imagined for yourself in New York no longer seems attainable or attractive, or simply no longer seems worth the wearying chase. It’s a story, admittedly, about the kinds of people who have the luxury to move away, just as they once had the luxury to choose to move here; that is, people not pulled to one city or another by family obligation or job transferal, but rather by some grander idea of who they are and where they might best fit.
Who Knew Effect
We know about Lake Effect in Buffalo. But there is another effect that we have here in Western New York — the WHO KNEW? Effect! I know Realtors® from around the country that have forwarded me the article and they say “Wow… Who knew Buffalo was so wonderful?” Buffalonians are very familiar with that reaction, every time we show off our beautiful city we hear it!
The overwhelming majority of comments on the New York Magazine article are positive. What is even more incredible are the comments that the article is generating, sure there are the few negative folks. Western New Yorkers are very familiar with them. As are the articles about the New York Magazine article…

I returned to Western New York late last year from Florida, and it is about choices. In his article he talks about Buffalo Homecoming, which I was a proud member of the group that wants those of you that moved to Pheonix, Boston, Atlanta, San Diego, Washington DC and Las Vegas to take another look at Buffalo! In fact we are already planning a huge party for you June 25 -28, 2009. Mark your calendars!
