Memorial Day Celebrations in Western New York

Most people think that Memorial Day is a three-day weekend with party and celebration with friends of family. But do you really know the reason behind Memorial Day? So as you enjoy the Indianapolis 500, BBQ picnics with friends and the official launch of summer, take a moment to remember the reason for the day.

Memorial day is a Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May and was previously named Decoration Day, which commemorates US men and women who perished while in the military service to their country. Originally started to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include casualties of any war or military action. Memorial Day first was celebration on May 5, 1866 in Waterloo, NY.

Since then it appears that many Americans have forgotten the true meaning of the holiday. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.”
