BUFFALO – In recognition of National Fire Prevention Month (October), Mayor Byron W. Brown and Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo announced the importance of fire safety and prevention, which will be emphasized through the distribution of free smoke detectors (and batteries) and “open houses” at designated Buffalo Fire Department firehouses.

Fire safety is something everyone should know and practice,” said Buffalo Mayor Brown.  “These open houses are just one way we are able to get the message across to our city residents to think smart and stay safe in case of fire.”

City of Buffalo residents who attend one of the open houses can receive a free smoke detector (note: supply is limited, so it is first come, first served).  Roughly 70 percent of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. The Buffalo Fire Department “open house” schedule is as follows:

Saturday, October 24th

10:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.  -   Engine 23
106 Collingwood at Bailey

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.   -  Engine 36
860 Hertel Avenue

12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.  -     Engine 19
209 Forest Avenue at Hawley

Smoke Detectors

The Fire Department recommends installing smoke detectors
in all hallways and bedrooms in your home.

Smoke detector devices should bear the Underwriters Laboratories seal.

Do you check your smoke detectors weekly?

Fire Safety Map

Have an escape plan that includes:

  • Two different ways out.
  • Someone assigned to help those that need help getting out.
  • Someone assigned to call 911.
  • A meeting place for everyone once they get out.
Important information in case you are in a fire:

Once you have made your way out of a burning building, STAY out! Go to a safe place (preferably prearranged) far enough away from the building in case of explosion or collapse and perform a head count of those who were in the building with you (family members or co-workers). If someone is missing, it is critical that you inform arriving Fire Personnel. Tell them who and how many people are missing and where they were last seen. DO NOT GO BACK IN AND TRY TO FIND THOSE MISSING!

Seek medical care if you are others who escaped from the burning building are injured. Keep in mind that the symptoms of lack of oxygen and/or exposure to toxic gases can closely resemble those of alcohol intoxication. Get immediate medical attention for them.

Seek shelter from the elements in a safe neighboring building, especially in the cold, rain, and extreme heat.

If you are not going to remain in the building, make sure your property is secure. Ensure the police are aware of the building being unattended. Lock up or board up open windows and doors.
