You had a long day at the office, you had a meeting that went long, you left your cell phone on your desk at noon, and after work you ran errands and you are dead tired! The answering machine is blinking, but you just don’t care. You’re lying on the couch in your living room, curled up under a warm blanket, in favorite flannel nightgown, mismatched socks, enjoying pizza and wings that just was delivered in front of the TV, watching last week’s taped episode of Extreame Home Makeover. You are licking your wounds from the major price reduction your Realtor® insisted upon the other day for your Buffalo home.

Suddenly your home phone rings, it is your Buffalo Realtor®, good news, that price reduction has created interest. They have been trying to reach you all afternoon. Since you needed a confirmed appointment, they thought they would try one last time before they let these people go home. After showing homes all afternoon to this couple they know your home is the ONE. They have a qualified Buffalo home buyer that wants to see your house this evening, in fact in a few moments; they want to know if they could show the house in 15 minutes. Your reaction is “You realize it is 7:30 at night” but your Realtor® is insistent.

Your Buffalo house looks like a bomb went off. You haven’t had a showing in weeks, so you have gotten a little lazy. You really want to get your Buffalo Home sold so you can make the offer on your dream home in Wheatfield that you have had your eyes set on since listing your house in June – it is now November! You say OK, hang up the phone and how do you make your Buffalo home presentable for this showing?

Where to start without having a heart attack?

  • First things first! Put the pizza and wings in the fridge, get dressed and start preparing your Buffalo home for this showing!

  • It is winter in Buffalo NY; the first thing you need to make sure is the driveway and walkway shoveled?

  • Do a clean sweep. Start at the front door. Grab a trash bag or laundry basket and gather up everything that is lying around that shouldn’t be, and throw it into the bag. Hide the bag.

  • Make sure the beds are made.

  • When was the last time the litter box was cleaned? Yikes! Resolve that immediately! As you go through each room, turn on the lights, open window treatments. Make sure each room is warm and inviting.

  • Plump up pillows on couches and chairs in living room, fold blankets. Give each cushion a swat for crumbs.

  • Sweep the floors quickly, run the vacuum cleaner, grab a dust rag and wipe down all surfaces.

  • Stack mail, newspapers and magazines in a nice, neat pile. Hide the pile.

  • Give the bathroom a speedy sprucing up! Wipe out the sink, wipe off the toilet seat and quickly swish the bowl. PUT the Lid down! Then, close the shower curtain, and throw odds and ends in cabinets or drawers. Spray some Lysol or air freshener so the bathroom will smell clean – even if it’s far from it.

  • Rinse off any dishes in the sink and stack them neatly or toss them in the dishwasher. Wipe off the table and counter tops.

  • Light a yummy scented candle in the kitchen – like Cinnamon Buns or Chocolate Cake. Lighting a few scented candles will uplift the mood of any home and make guests feel welcomed.

  • Throw some fruit in a bowl and place it in the center of your table. Fresh flowers also do wonders, if you have them on hand.

  • Still have a little time, grab glass cleaner and make sure the mirrors and glass surfaces are clean.

Cleaning up for unexpected home showings does not have to be a mad rush, if you stay caught up on your housework as a rule. Perhaps if you are a little over whelmed, you should hire a cleaning service?

Last but not least, get out of the house! Thank goodness pizza is good cold! The wings, heated up in the toaster over are pretty good…
