Description: At the beginning of the 20th century, Buffalo was dubbed the “City of Light†due to its widespread use of electrical power. People from all over the country came to celebrate the Pan-American Exposition in 1901, and witnessed a region bound for greatness. With the power of Niagara Falls roaring in the background, visitors of the Pan-Am experienced a booming industrial atmosphere and newly electrified streets. Buffalo had truly become one of America’s premier cities!
In keeping with our great history, and on behalf of the Buffalo B_Team, I would like to take a moment to tell you about our latest project. Just to recap quickly, the Buffalo B_Team is a group of young Buffalonians dedicated to inspiring the residents of the Greater Buffalo area to work collaboratively and play an active role in our community. The B_Team will be the catalyst for change, enhancing the quality of life in Western New York through advocacy, partnerships and exemplary leadership. The B_Team will also create a movement, driven by civic engagement, to instill a greater sense of pride in Buffalo\’s future generations. In the past, our organization has been fortunate enough to work on projects like the Buffalo Wing Fest, Buffalo Homecoming, Re-Tree WNY and Carvings for a Cause. During all of these projects we have played a vital role, and ultimately contributed to their success.
On Sunday, December 7th, 2008, we will be partnering with the Bickford, Edith and Alice Block Club to illuminate their neighborhood for a portion of the holiday season. Members of the B_Team will obtain the lights, spend the afternoon decorating the homes located on Alice Avenue and finish the evening off by throwing a holiday celebration, culminating in a lighting ceremony for the entire block club at 5:00 PM.
In an effort to reclaim our rightfully deserved title as the “City of Light†we have decided to highlight an area of the City that some may have forgotten. The block club in this neighborhood works tirelessly to promote civic engagement, but due to the changing times and tough economic situation, not everyone is paying attention.
What will begin on Alice Avenue on December 7th will hopefully start a movement throughout the entire City. As neighbors in this specific area unite, and watch their street transformed in an afternoon, we hope that they will receive not only holiday inspiration, but also civic inspiration courtesy of the B_Team.
As one of our friends, we are asking for your support. Our major need currently is funding to purchase the lights for the homes. If you are interested in sponsoring the event, we have three sponsorship levels available. A bronze sponsor will be asked to donate $100, a silver sponsor, $250, and a gold sponsor, $500. All sponsors will be recognized at the lighting ceremony and in the event program. Silver and gold sponsors will be acknowledged on the back of the event tee-shirts, and gold sponsors will be mentioned in the official press release.
Due to the fact that we are currently working on obtaining 501(c)(3) status, we ask that all checks be made out to South Buffalo Alive. South Buffalo Alive is a local organization who has graciously allowed us to operate underneath their 501(c)(3) status for the duration of this event.
